IFC and ARC Ltd. Sign Agreement to Expand Climate Risk Insurance in Africa
IFC and ARC Ltd. have partnered to scale climate risk insurance for smallholder farmers across Africa, integrating insurance into financial solutions for resilience. The collaboration supports the Africa Inclusive Climate Risk Insurance Program (AIIP), aiming to reach 5 million farmers by 2025. It also promotes gender-sensitive products and climate-smart agriculture to enhance financial inclusion and food security.

Advancing Gender Inclusion into Zambia’s Insurance Sector
Gender disparities in Zambia’s financial sector persist, with only 39.1% of women using insurance services compared to 60.9% of men. To address this, IFC, PIA, and BMZ-Germany are working through the Africa Inclusive Insurance Program to develop gender-responsive insurance products and leadership opportunities. A recent IFC-led workshop in Lusaka gathered 125 stakeholders to advance gender inclusion, emphasizing product design, female leadership, and regulatory support.

The Global Index Insurance Facility (GIIF) is a dedicated World Bank Group's program that facilitates access to finance for smallholder farmers, micro-entrepreneurs, and microfinance institutions through the provisions of catastrophic risk transfer solutions and index-based insurance in developing countries. Funded by the European Union, the governments of Germany, Japan, and the Netherlands, GIIF has facilitated approximately 10.5 million contracts, covering close to 50 million people, primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean.
